Italy winner Sordo unsure when he’ll be back in Hyundai WRC car – WRC

Rally Italy winner Dani Sordo says he remains in the dark about when he will next contest a World Rally Championship round with Hyundai.

Sordo took a sensational second career victory in Sardinia last weekend when Ott Tanak’s Toyota had a steering problem on the final stage while leading.

Hyundai is rotating its line-up in its second and third cars through the year, with Sordo, Sebastien Loeb and Andreas Mikkelsen all contesting limited programmes while title contender Thierry Neuville does the full season.

Sordo said he will now be waiting to hear from team boss Andrea Adamo when he is next required.

Rally Finland remains the big question for Hyundai, which potentially faces a driver shortage for what has traditionally been its weakest event.

Asked if he would like to do the event, the first round after the summer break that the WRC has just begun, Sordo told Autosport: “What do you want me to say? I don’t know.

“It’s not my preferred rally, it’s not one of my favourites, but maybe I can go there and take some points, fourth, fifth place something like that.

“But it’s August, no? That’s nice for the holidays.”

It was a different story when he was asked about the following round in Germany – the scene of his maiden WRC win with Citroen in 2013.

“I would like to do Germany, but maybe that’s complicated with Mikkelsen, Loeb and Thierry. I don’t know about that one,” he said.

Autosport understands Sordo is likely to be called up for Germany, with either Loeb or Mikkelsen in the third car.

Loeb’s sixth and final 2019 outing with Hyundai is currently scheduled for Spain later in the season.

Sordo continued: “I’m just trying to do my best in these rallies. Between now and the next rally, we have some time to think.

“It’s maybe too early to think about next year, but I don’t have anything sorted yet and I would like to continue with these rallies I am enjoying.”

Adamo will have to make up his mind who is in the third i20 for Finland by July 1, when entries close for the event.
