Thunderstorms, risk of lightning, delays start of Detroit IndyCar race – IndyCar

The first of this weekend’s two IndyCar Series races at Belle Isle has been delayed indefinitely due to thunderstorms.

The opening Detroit race was scheduled for 15:50 local time but a delay of at least an hour is expected due to the weather conditions.

An advisory for fans at the circuit stated: “Inclement weather is in the area and a weather warning has been issued.

“Seek shelter immediately and exit the grandstands .

“Racing action will be halted until conditions clear.

“We will notify you when it’s safe to return to your seats.”

The general practice is for the all-clear to be given 30 minutes after the last lightning flash.

An IndyCar spokesperson confirmed that from that moment it will take another 30 minutes for teams, cars, and equipment to be in place ready to start the race.

It is therefore unlikely that the race will start until at least 16:50 local time.

Andretti Autosport’s Alexander Rossi is due to start from pole position.
