Autosport’s annual ranking of the top 50 drivers of the year is always one of our most popular, and controversial, features of the year.

This year’s edition has been no exception, and on the latest edition of The Autosport podcast we reveal the secrets of how the list is put together.

Matt Beer, Jack Cozens and Matt Kew join Edd Straw to explain the underlying methodology behind the top 50 and how the many specialist journalists who contribute to Autosport via the Motorsport Network are consulted.

The reasons behind the ranking of the top IndyCar driver ahead of the best performer in NASCAR, how Romain Grosjean made the top 50 after his early-season Formula 1 mishaps and some of the drivers who were unfortunate not to make the list are also discussed.

The full top 50 is available here and appears in the special Christmas double issue of the Autosport print magazine, which is available now.
