Heavy overnight snow in the Martinsville area has forced the postponement of Sunday’s NASCAR Cup series race until Monday.

Sunday’s race has been rescheduled for 2pm local time (7pm UK time) on Monday after several inches of snow and ice covered the area of southwest Virginia overnight on Saturday.

Before the Cup race takes place, the supporting NASCAR Trucks event, which was originally scheduled for Saturday afternoon but was stopped on Lap 24 of 250 due to inclement weather, will be restarted at 11am local time on Monday.

The race will resume from where it was halted on Saturday, with polesitter Ben Rhodes in the lead.

Reigning champion Martin Truex Jr will start the Cup race from pole, after the field was set by owner points following the cancellation of Saturday’s qualifying session due to rain.
