Kurt Busch has completed his deal to join the Chip Ganassi Racing NASCAR Cup team for the 2019 season.

The 2004 Cup champion confirmed on Sunday he would leave Stewart-Haas Racing, for which he has driven since 2014, and had previously been tipped to join Ganassi.

He has now announced that move, which will involve him replacing veteran Jamie McMurray in the team’s #1 Chevrolet. Busch’s main sponsor Monster Energy will also transfer to Ganassi.

Busch scored six wins in SHR’s #41 Ford during his five years with the team, which included winning the Daytona 500 last year.

He achieved a best overall finish of seventh with the team on two occasions – first in 2016, before repeating that finish this year.

McMurray, who placed 20th in this year’s Cup series standings, is understood to have been offered a drive in next year’s Daytona 500 as well as a non-racing role with Ganassi.

SHR has not announced Busch’s replacement for 2019, but Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota driver Daniel Suarez is expected to slot in at the squad.
