Reigning NASCAR Cup champion Martin Truex Jr says he enters the 2018 title decider at Homestead this weekend under little pressure because Furniture Row has been less competitive this year.
Truex is up against Kevin Harvick, Kyle Busch and Joey Logano in the ‘championship four’ shootout.
He, Harvick and Busch dominated much of the season, but Truex has not won a race since Kentucky in mid-July and only made it through the ’round of eight’ on his points tally – sealing his place with a 14th at Phoenix last weekend.
Furniture Row will close down at the end of the season, with Truex and crew chief Cole Pearn moving to Joe Gibbs Racing.
“You have to have a little bit of luck on your side, have a good racecar and have things play out the way you need them to suit your set-up and suit what you’re doing,” said Truex.
“For us, we’ve got a lot of confidence and we really don’t have a lot of pressure on us.
“We haven’t been the fastest car this year by any means, but when we hit it right we can beat anybody.
“If we can go down there and hit it right, we’re going to have some fun.”
Truex described Furniture Row’s Homestead swansong as “one last hurrah and we’ll give it all we got”.
Last year Truex claimed the title with a win at Homestead, holding off Busch.
“Homestead is a tough track, it’s a long race and anything can happen,” he said.
“We saw last year that we were really good on short runs and [Busch] was good on long runs, and at the end it came down to a short run and we were able to hold him off.”
