NASCAR has released a statement after a New York police department arrested CEO Brian France for driving under the influence.

France was arrested on Sunday night for alleged aggravated driving while intoxicated and for possession of a controlled substance.

The 56-year-old was held overnight and told of his charges on Monday night at Sag Harbour Village Justice Court.

NASCAR said in a statement: “We are aware of an incident that occurred last night and are in the process of gathering information.

“We take this as a serious matter and will issue a statement after we have all of the facts.”

France has been CEO of the organisation since 2003 and is the grandson of NASCAR founder William HG France.

Under NASCAR’s substance abuse policy, France could be required to take part in the series’ Road to Recovery programme, which will require a professional to outline his path to a return and could include drug testing.
