Dale Coyne Racing’s Pietro Fittipaldi believes it is important to “live” the Indianapolis 500 experience after his World Endurance Championship crash ruled him out of the race in 2018.
Fittipaldi is currently recovering from a complex fracture of his lower left leg and a broken right ankle
In an exclusive interview with Motorsport.tv’s Julia Piquet, Fittipaldi also gives his perspective on how his crash aboard the DragonSpeed LMP1 car at Spa played out.
After having surgery on the day of his crash, Fittipaldi headed to Indianapolis for the next phase of his recovery with IndyCar’s medical team after he was discharged from the Belgian hospital.
Living at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway during the Month of May, Fittipaldi told Autosport that being present was vital experience ahead of a future Indy 500 attempt.
“What I’ve been trying to do is sort of live the weekend without actually racing it,” he said.
“When I come back next year or the year after, I’ve already been through an Indy 500 weekend with all the procedures that go with it, all the practice days leading up to qualifying, and then practice days after qualifying for the race.
“That’s what I’ve been trying to do. Actually, before our interview started, we had to turn off the radio because I have the team radio there and I listen to all the chatter from my team.
“So that’s what I’m trying to do, sort of live the weekend without actually being in the car driving, but living it so I can gain experience that way.”
