James Davison has become the 35th driver to be announced for the 2018 Indianapolis 500, having signed a deal in partnership with AJ Foyt Racing.
Davison subbed in for the injured Dale Coyne Racing’s Sebastien Bourdais at last year’s Indy 500, with that drive gaining the attention of Jonathan Byrd Racing.
Byrd has now backed Davison’s 2018 deal, the driver’s fourth Indy 500 attempt, alongside Foyt, Hollinger MotorSport and Belardi Auto Racing.
It means that the Foyt team has now expanded to three cars alongside its regular drivers Tony Kanaan and Matheus Leist.
“I am honoured to be driving for the legendary AJ Foyt with Byrd-Hollinger-Belardi at the Indianapolis 500,” said Davison. “This will be my first full two-week programme in the four years that I have been a part of the event now.
“We have expectations to meet and I cannot wait to get after it.”
Team boss Larry Foyt met Davison during his Indy Lights career and is excited to work with him at the Indy 500.
“I’m happy to be joining with Byrd, Hollinger, and Belardi for this entry,” Foyt said. “They have worked hard to ensure we will have the resources for a strong programme.
“James has shown he can do a great job at Indianapolis and I think this entry will be a great addition to this year’s 500.”
Jay Howard had previously marked the 33rd entry for the race, bringing it to a capacity grid.
Subsequent Indy 500 deals for JR Hildebrand at Ed Carpenter Racing and Davison means that there will be bumping ahead of this year’s race.
